Get to know Laura, a Holistic Psychologist at Therapy Alberta, in this interview blog.

Laura Romero, holistic therapist at Therapy Alberta

Who are you?

I am someone who thinks and feels deeply about the Universe, our planet and the people, plants and animals in it. I love to explore, adventure, experience, and learn and grow along the way.

What led you to become a therapist?

I discovered energy work (Reiki and Zen Shiatsu) while living in Singapore and that helped me understand connection in a ‘whole’ new way. Once I moved home and opened my own Reiki practice, I quickly realized that I wanted to learn more about the psychology of the human condition so I could be of service in a more profound way. I liked the idea of taking an energetic approach and also a scientific approach and melding them together for a new understanding.

Do you ever get overwhelmed by the stuff people tell you?

Yes! My overwhelm is a signal to remember to implement and protect important boundaries for myself.

How do you handle being a therapist?

I believe this is my calling - I was born to do it.

What makes your job fulfilling?

Doing my part to support people in whatever small way I can helps me to fulfill one of my core values which is to be of service.

What would you tell someone who’s nervous to start therapy?

It’s a very typical response to be nervous to start something either for the first time, or to begin a joint venture with someone you don’t have a relationship with (yet)! I always encourage people to call me for a consult before booking a session to see if we may be a good fit. This is a time I can answer some questions and share some parts of my therapeutic process with potential clients.

What is your life philosophy?

I believe we are all energy, and as such, we are all connected. Did you know that 97% of the human body is composed of the same elements that make up stars? No wonder we have such a calling to look up and marvel (and explore) the night sky.

Aloha from Laura's blog

What are your hobbies?

Reading, journaling, exercising, traveling, cooking, spending time with family and friends, time in nature, contemplating the complexities of life and philosophizing the meaning of this life and what lies beyond.

What are some obstacles you’ve overcome?

Personal health challenges, spouse’s chronic illness, personal neurodivergence, and moving to a continent half way around the world.

Do you have kids?

Yes! Two girls (in their tween years now!)

What’s your favorite movie?

One of my favorite movies of all time is Under the Tuscan Sun. I knew I was in love with Italy before I backpacked through there on my own at age 21, and the movie I watched on repeat leading up to that experience was Under the Tuscan Sun.

What’s your favorite book?

I don’t have a favorite - I love so many!

What are you reading right now?

I recently finished Anne of Green Gables that was given to me by my grandmother when I was 10 years old - it took me all this time to read it and as soon as I finished the book I wished I was at the beginning again. I loved it!

Cats or dogs or other?

I love both but I’m allergic to cats so we only have dogs in our house - we adopted them both from rescue agencies

What did you want to be when you were 10 years old?

It changed every week - an astronaut and a paleontologist were definitely on the list!

What’s your favorite quote?

So many beautiful quotes I don’t have one favorite, but one of them is:

The wound is where the light enters - Rumi

Indoors or outdoors?

Both!

What’s your favorite food?

I don’t have one, but I’m always happiest when I’m eating somewhere in Europe. I also miss the beautiful variety of foods in Singapore - it’s an incredible place for foodies!

What’s your wish for your clients?

To be able to remember and re-discover their personal power and strength that resides within.
