It's time to better understand and express yourself.

Shawn Canning Calgary Men's Therapist

Do you feel you keep making the same mistakes or repeating unhelpful behaviors?

Maybe you find yourself making impulsive decisions, getting caught up in the moment, or reacting without thinking.

The ways you learned to cope and adapt to stress in your life can also show up in relationships, causing suffering and conflict.

I work with adults and teens who feel like they're losing control or stuck in harmful patterns.

My name is Shawn Canning, Social Worker and Men's Therapist. I live in Calgary, on Treaty 7, Metis Region 3 land.

I am approachable, curious, and committed to creating a comfortable space where you can speak freely and be yourself during sessions.

I offer individual and couples therapy to help people better understand themselves and make lasting change.

I believe change happens in a respectful, compassionate, and collaborative relationship. Together, we can identify some of your patterns and explore what is getting in the way of your goals and values.

I specialize in helping men, teens, and couples struggling with issues around masculinity to develop greater self-awareness and self-compassion, and ultimately feel more connected with themselves and others.

I practice from a strength-based relational approach. We will practice new strategies and tools that use your strengths to build your capacity. When you develop alternative strategies for handling challenging feelings, you can move toward greater ease, confidence and enjoyment. It is my hope you feel seen, heard and understood in a new light.

More than just my work:

  1. Favorite quote: “I help people as a way to work on myself, and I work on myself to help people...To me, that's what the emerging game is all about.” Ram Dass

  2. What brings you a sense of ease? Music - I’m a musician. Playing and listening to music fosters a sense of ease and moments of joy.

  3. Something fun or interesting: I once built a guitar

Therapy Alberta is an independent, profit for good, non-government therapy group practice serving Calgary & Alberta

Therapy Alberta respectfully acknowledges we are supported by the land of Turtle Island, now called Canada. Turtle Island is the home of the many First Nations, Métis and Inuit who have travelled, gathered, lived on and cared for these lands for centuries. Calling Canada our home is a privilege and responsibility. Declarations of land are only one component of our commitment to Truth and Reconciliation.

We are committed to new communities of decolonization. We strive to create safe, affirming, anti-racist and anti-oppressive spaces to welcome and provide free mental health care for people from Indigenous, Black, Color and LGBTQ+ communities and those impacted by trauma. Support our mission today.
