The name Canada came from the St. Lawrence Iroquoian word kanata, meaning village.
Therapy Alberta Land Acknowledgment
Therapy Alberta respectfully acknowledges we are supported by the land of Turtle Island, now called Canada. Alberta is the traditional homelands of the many First Nations, Métis and Inuit who have travelled, gathered, lived on and cared for these lands for centuries. This land is colonially known as Treaties 4, 6, 7, 8 and 10, and we recognize before treaties it lived under sacred names spoken by the people who cared for this land. Calling Canada our home is a privilege and responsibility. We offer this acknowledgement as an act of gratitude.
We are committed to new communities of decolonization. We strive to create safe, affirming, anti-racist and anti-oppressive spaces to welcome people from Indigenous, Black, Color and 2SLGBTQIA+ communities and those impacted by trauma.
My Land Acknowledgement
I acknowledge I live on the traditional territories of the Nêhiyawak Cree, the Anishinaabe Saulteaux, the Niitsítapi including the Siksika, Kainai, and Piikani, the Dene, the Nakota Sioux, and Stoney Nakoda peoples, and within the historical Northwest Métis homeland.
I acknowledge the Indigenous peoples and their stories, ceremonies, and teachings.
I acknowledge the harms of colonization, past and present.
I acknowledge I am not Indigenous. My ancestors were settlers of Irish, Scottish, English, and French origins.
This is the home of the many First Nations, Métis and Inuit who have travelled, gathered, lived on, and cared for these lands for centuries.
