Get to know Malisa Morris, a Registered Social Worker who supports parents through pregnancy, postpartum, and early parenthood, in this interview from our Meet a Therapist in Alberta series. Malisa shares her life philosophy, how she stays grounded, and what she'd tell someone who's nervous to start therapy.

Who are you?

I'm Malisa, a Registered Social Worker and mental health therapist.

I approach my work with empathy, compassion, patience, and grace, creating safe spaces where clients feel heard and supported.

What led you to become a therapist?

I wanted to help people navigate life's challenges, find their inner strength, and feel truly understood.

What is your life philosophy?

Everyone's story matters.

Healing comes from connection, understanding, and self-compassion, and even small steps can lead to meaningful change.

Do you ever get overwhelmed by the stuff people tell you?

Sometimes, yes.

I rely on supervision, self-care, and healthy boundaries to stay grounded and fully present.

How do you handle being a therapist?

I stay trauma-informed, patient, and compassionate, listening actively and meeting clients where they are.

What makes your job fulfilling?

Seeing clients gain insight, feel understood, and grow in confidence is deeply rewarding.

What would you tell someone who's nervous to start therapy?

It's completely normal to feel nervous.

Therapy is a safe, non-judgmental space, and you can move at your own pace.

What are some obstacles you've overcome?

Balancing work, family life, and ongoing learning, while staying true to my values and taking care of myself.

What are your hobbies?

Yoga, gym workouts, exploring new cuisines, travelling, and watching K-dramas.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Spend time with my husband and four sons.

I also like to watch documentaries or The Masked Singer, and read self-help books.

What's the best advice you've ever received?

Take care of yourself first, so you can truly help others.

Do you have kids?

Yes, four wonderful sons.

What's your favourite show or movie?

K-dramas, feel-good movies, and The Masked Singer.

Right now, I'm watching a mix of K-dramas and thought-provoking documentaries.

What's your favourite book?

Atlas of the Heart by Brené Brown.

Right now, I'm reading Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner.

Cats, dogs, or other?

Dogs. They bring energy and joy to life.

What did you want to be when you were 10?

A singer.

I've always loved music and expressing myself creatively.

What's your favourite quote?

Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about.

Indoors or outdoors?

A balance of both.

I enjoy the outdoors for energy, and time indoors for calm, reflection, and focus.

What's your favourite food?

Asian and Caribbean cuisine, especially dishes with bold, comforting flavours.

What's your wish for your clients?

That they feel heard, supported, and empowered, find self-compassion, and gain the confidence to live authentically.
