Meet a Therapist in Alberta: Laura Romero

*meet a therapist in alberta holistic therapy Aug 09, 2024

Get to know Laura Romero, a Registered Psychologist who takes a holistic approach to therapy, in this interview from our Meet a Therapist in Alberta series. Laura shares how energy work in Singapore led her to psychology, her life philosophy, and what she'd tell someone who's nervous to start therapy.

Who are you?

I'm someone who thinks and feels deeply about the universe, our planet, and the people, plants, and animals in it.

I love to explore, adventure, experience, and learn and grow along the way.

What led you to become a therapist?

I discovered energy work, Reiki and Zen Shiatsu, while living in Singapore, and it helped me understand connection in a whole new way.

When I moved home and opened my own Reiki practice, I quickly realized I wanted to learn more about the psychology of the human condition, so I could be of service in a deeper way. I liked the idea of bringing an energetic approach and a scientific approach together into a new understanding.

Do you ever get overwhelmed by the stuff people tell you?

Yes! My overwhelm is a signal to remember to set and protect important boundaries for myself.

How do you handle being a therapist?

I believe this is my calling. I was born to do it.

What makes your job fulfilling?

Supporting people in whatever small way I can helps me live one of my core values: to be of service.

What would you tell someone who's nervous to start therapy?

It's very natural to feel nervous starting something for the first time, or starting something with someone you don't have a relationship with (yet)!

I always encourage people to have a consult call before booking a session, to see if it's a good fit. It's a chance to ask questions and hear a bit about how the therapist works.

What is your life philosophy?

I believe we are all energy, and so we are all connected.

Did you know that about 97 percent of the human body is made of the same elements found in stars? No wonder we feel such a pull to look up at the night sky, marvel at it, and explore it.

What are your hobbies?

Reading, journaling, exercising, travelling, cooking, spending time with family and friends, and time in nature.

I also love contemplating the complexities of life, and philosophizing about the meaning of this life and what lies beyond.

What are some obstacles you've overcome?

Personal health challenges, my spouse's chronic illness, my own neurodivergence, and moving to a continent halfway around the world.

Do you have kids?

Yes! Two girls.

What's your favourite movie?

One of my favourite movies of all time is Under the Tuscan Sun.

I knew I was in love with Italy before I backpacked through it on my own at 21, and that was the movie I watched on repeat leading up to the trip.

What's your favourite book?

I don't have a favourite book. I love so many!

I recently finished Anne of Green Gables, which my grandmother gave me when I was 10. It took me all this time to read it, and as soon as I finished, I wished I was back at the beginning. I loved it!

Cats, dogs, or other?

I love both, but I'm allergic to cats, so we only have dogs in our house.

We adopted both of them from rescues.

What did you want to be when you were 10?

It changed every week, but an astronaut and a paleontologist were definitely on the list!

What's your favourite quote?

There are so many beautiful quotes that I don't have one favourite, but one of them is from Rumi: The wound is the place where the light enters you.

Indoors or outdoors?

Both!

What's your favourite food?

I don't have one, but I'm always happiest when I'm eating somewhere in Europe.

I also miss the beautiful variety of food in Singapore. It's an incredible place for foodies!

What's your wish for your clients?

To remember and rediscover the personal power and strength that live within them.
