Our Commitment

Therapy Alberta offers education and community around trauma-sensitive care. This is for health professionals who provide it, and for people who need support.

We commit to safe, welcoming spaces with equal care for everyone, including 2SLGBTQIA+ and BIPOC communities.

This commitment shapes our directory, our content and our community. Practitioner listings include pronouns, part of our commitment to an inclusive space from the first contact.

This policy sets out what we expect from everyone connected to Therapy Alberta. It also covers what happens if that expectation isn’t met.

Who This Applies To

This policy applies to:

  • Practitioners listed in our directory
  • Members of our community and professional access group
  • Visitors and future clients using the Site
  • Therapy Alberta itself, in how we run the platform

Our Standard

Therapy Alberta doesn’t tolerate discrimination. That means unfair treatment based on a person’s traits, whether meant or not. This includes traits like:

  • Ability
  • Age
  • Body size
  • Cultural background
  • Education
  • Ethnic or national origin
  • Gender expression or gender identity
  • Immigration status
  • Language
  • Marital or family status
  • Political views
  • Race
  • Religion
  • Sexual orientation
  • Income or social status
  • Any other ground the Alberta Human Rights Act protects, or that’s a real barrier to care

This standard covers our own platform: the community and therapist access group. Directory practitioners agree to something more too. They agree to hold this same standard with the clients they meet through our directory. A serious breach is grounds for removal from the directory (see What Happens Next).

A Self-Selection Model

We don’t audit or investigate a practitioner’s own practice for inclusivity. Directory practitioners agree to this standard as part of applying to be listed. Everyone in our community is expected to hold the same standard, even without a formal agreement step at signup.

This is a self-selection model. Practitioners who can’t commit to this standard shouldn’t apply.

Reporting a Concern

Did you experience or see discrimination on the Therapy Alberta platform, like in our community or therapist access group? Please contact us. We’ll let you know we’ve received your report, and take it seriously and privately from there. We may ask for details, but you never have to share more than you’re comfortable with.

Did a practitioner discriminate against you during your care? That’s a matter for their regulatory college. They have the authority to investigate and act on clinical conduct. We encourage you to file a complaint with them directly.

What Happens Next

We reserve the right to remove or limit a practitioner’s directory listing, or a member’s community access. This applies if we learn of conduct that breaks this policy, through a report, public record, or regulatory action. This is a condition of listing, not a finding of wrongdoing. It doesn’t change our Terms of Use: Therapy Alberta isn’t responsible for a listed practitioner’s services, conduct, or outcomes.

Therapy Alberta isn’t a regulatory body. We don’t investigate or judge professional conduct complaints.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top shows the latest update.
